Blog on imechanica

A T-stress is not supposed contribute to the stress intensity factor because its contribution to the free energy normally does not change during crack growth. However, there are at least three plausible exceptions known to the blogger. These are discussed in the blog. One concerns small cracks on atomistic length scales, where the elastic modulus is known to change for a few atomic layers closest to the crack surface. Another case, in which energy release is caused by progressive buckling in the crack area, is described in the EFM paper "Effect of initial T-stress on stress intensity factor for a crack in a thin pre-stressed layer" published by Zi-Cheng Jiang, Guo-Jin Tang and Xian-Fang Li in Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 150 (2015) p. 19-27. A third related case is discussed in the blog, but there must be more cases. The blogger encourages anyone who has any experience or notions of the kind, to report on the blog site on iMechanica.

ESIS TC2 chair election

Nominations are open for the chair and co-chair of ESIS TC2 (Micromechanisms). These should be sent by 31st January 2018 to Prof. T. J. Marrow (, the secretary of the TC2 ESIS . Please cc all nominations to Jaroslav Pokluda (, TC2 Chair) and Otmar Kolednik (,TC2 co-chair). Self-nominations are accepted. If you are nominating someone else, please ask them to confirm, by email, that they accept to be nominated. The vote will be held during February/March, and details will be circulated by email to TC2 members and will also be published in the ESIS newsletter and website. Please note that it is necessary to have a current ESIS membership to be eligible to vote or stand for election

ESIS Technical Committees: NEW SERVICE

For each Technical Committee, a shared Google Drive folder will be activated. Filling the FORM and joining the TCs (one or more, it doesn't matter!), you will be able to share your publications (in the pre-print format), giving them more evidence, and you will be always updated about the papers published by the other TC members on the topics of your interest (and, obviously, about the TC activities).

ESIS: G Suite for all the ESIS members

ESIS has been approved for Google Apps for Nonprofits. The G Suite (basic version) has been activated for all the ESIS members (from 2016 onwards) and soon they will receive the credentials completely free of charge (the normal cost of this service is 50 USD per user/year).
Many new services are active in the G Suite (e.g., Classroom, that is really useful in the organization of Summer Schools) and other services are improved if compared to the "standard" Google services (e.g., Google Drive is 30 Gb instead of 15 Gb).
If you are a 2017 ESIS member and you did not receive the credentials, please, send us an email (
Since 2017, G Suite credentials have being used as credentials for the ESIS website (please, activate these credentials in Google before using them in the ESIS website).

Be always update with ESIS events and activities!
