Celebrating Women in Engineering

June 23, 2018 is International Women in Engineering Day. In honor of this day, Springer authors & editors were asked by Springer to share their experiences as women in the engineering fields. Read on to find exclusive interviews & explore the research on women in the STEM fields.

Blog on imechanica (NEW post)

We have previously discussed what seems to be common practice when stress and strain fields are analysed with the purpose to obtain stress intensity factors. In the read worthy paper "Evaluation of stress intensity factors under multiaxial and compressive conditions using low order displacement or stress field fitting", R. Andersson, F. Larsson and E. Kabo, in Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 189 (2018) 204–220, the authors propose a promising methodology for evaluation of stress intensity factors from the asymptotic stress or displacement fields surrounding the crack tip. The focus is on cracks appearing beneath the contact between train wheel and rail and the difficulties that is caused by compression induced contact between crack surfaces. The basis of the analysis is Williams' series of power functions r^(n/2) where n is any integer. The blogger takes the opportunity to discuss the validity of the wide spread practice to neglect all terms n=-2 and below. Anyone who wishes express an opinion is encouraged to do so via the blog site on iMechanica.org.

ESIS Technical Committees: NEW SERVICE

For each Technical Committee, a shared Google Drive folder has been activated. Filling the FORM and joining the TCs (one or more, it doesn't matter!), you will be able to share your publications (in the pre-print format), giving them more evidence, and you will be always updated about the papers published by the other TC members on the topics of your interest (and, obviously, about the TC activities).

ESIS: G Suite for all the ESIS members

ESIS has been approved for Google Apps for Nonprofits. The G Suite (basic version) has been activated for all the ESIS members (from 2016 onwards) and soon they will receive the credentials completely free of charge (the normal cost of this service is 50 USD per user/year).
Many new services are active in the G Suite (e.g., Classroom, that is really useful in the organization of Summer Schools) and other services are improved if compared to the "standard" Google services (e.g., Google Drive is 30 Gb instead of 15 Gb).
If you are a 2017 ESIS member and you did not receive the credentials, please, send us an email (esisweb.org@gmail.com).
Since 2017, G Suite credentials have being used as credentials for the ESIS website (please, activate these credentials in Google before using them in the ESIS website).

Be always update with ESIS events and activities!
