The main objectives of the Project are:
1. Development of new procedures for accurate determination of fatigue characteristics of materials with controlled strain energy density parameter at the strength test stand.
2. Development of a spectral method for fatigue life assessment of materials under multiaxial random loading in frequency domain.
3. Improvement of procedures of fatigue damage map determination for machine components and structures subjected to multiaxial service loading by calculations with FEM or BEM and spectral methods.

ESIS TC3.1 Sub-Committee “Multiaxial Fatigue”
ACTIVITIES DURING 2008-2009
Implemented project: Energy-based approach to multiaxial fatigue using the critical plane. Stage 3.
As in the previous period (2004-2006), the main bjective of the project was development of the existing and formulation of new algorithms for estimation of fatigue life of machine components and structures subjected to multiaxial service loading, based on mechanisms of crack initiation and propagation, identified during tests. The energy-based parameter for description of fatigue properties of materials under random loading, used for generalization of multiaxial fatigue failure criteria, was analyzed and verified. The test results obtained under cyclic, constant and variable amplitudes, random, proportional and non-proportional loading were used for validation of the generalized criterion of maximum shear and normal strain energy density in the critical plane. Much progress was made in fatigue life evaluation of some chosen welded joints in simple and complex states of stress and in development of the spectral method for fatigue life assessment in materials under multiaxial random loading in frequency domain.

FUTURE ACTIVITIES (2008-2010)
Implemented project: Energy based approach to multiaxial fatigue using the critical plane. Stage 4
The main objectives of the project are the same as in the stages 1, 2 and 3, but we are going to concentrate on the following tasks:
1. Development of new procedures for precise determination of the fatigue characteristics of materials with a controlled strain energy density parameter at the strength test stand. Up to now, the energy fatigue characteristics of materials, expressed by the amplitude of strain energy density (Wa-Nf) has been indirectly determined, i.e. by calculations with the use of parameters of the Mason- Coffin curve (εa-Nf). Only the amplitude of strains, εa is controlled during this test, and it is assumed that amplitude of stress σa remains constant. However, for many cyclically unstable materials such as polymers, composites and some metallicalloys, the amplitude of stress, σa, changes considerably causing the energy fatigue characteristics of material (Wa-Nf) to be not precisely determined. Thus, a more precise and direct determination of the energy characteristics becomes an important task for an energy-based approach to multiaxial fatigue.
2. Advancement of the spectral method for fatigue life assessment for materials under multiaxial random loading in the frequency
domain.
3. Improvement of procedures for fatigue damage maps forecast for machine components and structures subjected tomultiaxial service loading by calculations wit FEM or BEM spectral methods.

- Main Objectives of ESIS 2003
The main objective of this Committee has been to organize a well structured group of Sub-Committees in order to analyze some major issues not yet completely understood in the field of fatigue. Professor Andrea Carpinteri and Professor Les P Pook (TC3 Co-Chairmen) and Dr Andrea Spagnoli (TC3 Secretary) have collected suggestions on which specific fatigue aspects should have been examined by individual TC3 Sub-Committees, and how to build up the strength of TC3. Active subcommittees are:

The main objective of TC3.1 is the development of existing algorithms and the formulation of new procedures in order to estimate fatigue life of machine components and civil engineering structures subjected to multiaxial service loading, based on mechanisms of crack initiation and propagation, identified during tests. A Research Project entitled "Energy-based approach to multiaxial fatigue using the critical plane" is in progress.

TC3 Officers have advertised and co-ordinated fatigue activities so that they have been arranged out-of-phase. Therefore let the TC3 Officers know also about activities being planned in the future (especially as far as fatigue conferences are concerned) so that TC3 Officers can be more efficient in the circulation of information. Furthermore, the TC3 Committee has requested up-dated information for the TC3 database to ensure that all TC3 members received information at the correct address, well in advance of any meetings. Besides the postal address, FAX number and ESIS membership number, we also require the e-mail address of all ESIS members interested in TC3. - ESIS TC3 Activities during the present year (2003)
2.1 Professor Les P. Pook (London) has been the Guest Editor of a Special Issue of the international Journal "Fatigue and Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures" (FFEMS), under the title "Biaxial/Multiaxial Fatigue", Vol. 26, No. 6, 2003. Associate Guest Editors have been Professor K. Dang Van (École Polytechnique, Palaiseau, France) and Professor Cetin Morris Sonsino (Fraunhofer- Institute für Betriebsfestigkeit, LBF, Darmstadt, Germany).
2.2 Professor Andrea Carpinteri (Parma), Professor Manuel de Freitas (Lisbon) and Dr Andrea Spagnoli (Parma) are the Editors of an ESIS Special Technical Publication (ESIS STP Volume 31) entitled "Biaxial/Multiaxial Fatigue and Fracture", published by Elsevier Science Ltd. 2.3 Professor Alfredo Navarro (Seville), Professor Eduardo de los Rios (Sheffield), Professor Andrea Carpinteri (Parma) and Professor Pook (London) have been the Chairmen of an ESIS international conference on "Cumulative Fatigue Damage" (CFD 2003) held in Seville, Spain, 26th to 30th May, 2003.
2.4 Professor Andrea Carpinteri (Parma) and Professor Les P. Pook (London) have been the Chairmen of an ESIS international conference on "Fatigue Crack Paths" (FCP 2003) held in Parma, Italy, 18th to 20th September, 2003. Such a conference has drawn together the different strategies that designers and failure analysts face in relation to 3- dimensional stress-strain fields, projected fracture paths, critical plane approaches, and the fundamentals of Stage I (shear) and Stage II (tensile type) cracks. Physicists, metallurgists and fracture mechanics experts have all been required to solve some long-term problems presenting high quality papers.

Pook (London) are the Guest Editors of a Special Issue of the international Journal "Fatigue and Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures" (FFEMS), under the title "Fatigue Crack Paths" (in progress). - ESIS TC3 Present and planned future activities
3.1 Professor Cetin Morris Sonsino (Darmstadt) is the Chairman of the Seventh International "Biaxial/Multiaxial Fatigue and Fracture" conference to be held in Berlin, 28th to 30th June, 2004. Co-Chairmen are Professor P.D. Portella (Berlin) and Professor H. Zenner (Clausthal- Zellerfeld). The aim of this conference is not only to display the substantial international progress achieved in understanding of multiaxial fatigue and fracture behavior during the past years, but also to illustrate how research results apply to industrial practice and to close the gap between design and manufacturing engineers and scientists. Associated failure assessment procedures are now becoming more complex, and it is essential to have a forum that includes experimentalists, theoreticians, industrial practitioners and academic experts.
