TC2 UPDATE 2011
The 7th Meeting of the TC2 on Micromechanisms of the European Structural Integrity Society, ESIS, http://www.esisweb.org/ will be held on
Thursday, November 24, and Friday, November 25, 2011
at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing http://www.bam.de/ Berlin, Germany.
Topic:
The topic of the meeting is meant to be broad and covers all aspects of the effects of micromechanisms on fatigue and fracture. Experimental and computational studies are welcome. Also reports of current investigations can be presented. It is expected that, on the basis of contributions presented at this workshop and the next one in Oxford, 2012, special issues of Int. J. Fatigue and Engng. Fract. Mechanics will appear in 2013 at the latest.
All presentations will be oral presentations; there will be no parallel sessions. The time allocated for each presentation will be fixed after the whole program of the meeting is known. The number of participants is limited to 60.
Deadline:
31th March, 2011: Declaration of interest in the meeting/presentation title
We would kindly ask you to send us a short note whether you are interested in the meeting and the title of your presentation if you intend to present a contribution. Those who have sent this declaration of interest will receive further information about the registration details. TC2 UPDATE 2010
Minutes of the TC2 ESIS meeting
Brno, June 29, 2010
Present: Prof. J. Pokluda (CZ), Prof. I. Dlouh (CZ), Dr. B. Fedelich (GE), Prof. J. Janovec (SVK), Dr. V. Kozhusko (AT), Prof. J. Marrow (UK), Dr. K. Slamecka (CZ).
Agenda:
1) TC2 – State of the Art
2) ESIS/Elsevier agreement
3) Special issues and other future outputs
4) Next TC2 meetings
TC2 - State of the Art
TC2 is one of the best working TC´s in the frame of ESIS. There are regular meetings and workshops each year. Two special issues of Engineering Fracture Mechanics (August 2008 and January 2010) devoted to TC2 were published.
ESIS/Elsevier agreement
According to information received from Prof. Stefano Beretta, the Elsevier support for ESIS will be substantially reduced in the next years. The only think actually remaining unchanged is 5000 Euro for each special issue published in selected Elsevier journals. This means that additional financial resources should be searched for. Nevertheless, the ESIS/Elsevier agreement should be re-considered or a new, more favourable, Publishing House should be found.
Special issues and other future outputs
A general agreement was met in the decision that further production of special issues or STP´s will be suspended until the receipt of 4 000 Euro as a part of 10 000 Euro ESIS income from Elsevier for two special issues. This amount was promised to the TC2 chairman from the ESIS ExCo in order to enable a support for young scientists to participate at TC2 workshops. The guest editorial is too hard work to be done without a clear background and an appropriate support from ESIS.
Next TC2 meetings
The next meeting will be held during the ECF18 in Dresden in August 2010. Dr. Fedelich promised to organize a TC2 workshop in Berlin next year. Prof. Marrow will consider an arrangement of a TC2 workshop in Oxford, UK, in 2012.

The TC2 meeting was held as a part of the workshop on Micromechanisms in Fracture and Fatigue, organized by Prof. O. Kolednik and Prof. J. Pokluda in Leoben, April 20-21, 2009. During the workshop 25 oral presentations were given by participants from 7 European countries. The Book of Abstracts was available for all attendants.

Agenda:
1) TC2 – State of the Art
2) Special issues and other future outputs
3) Next TC2 meetings
4) Discussion
Ad 1) TC2- State of the Art
This was the third meeting of the re-established TC2, after its first meeting in Alexandroupolis in August 2006. Since that time, a well established group of scientists all over Europe regularly participated in the TC2 meetings. There is already nice and visible scientific output from the TC2 work, for example the special issue of Engng. Fract. Mechanics devoted to the TC2 meetings at ECF16 and MSMF 5 edited by J. Pokluda and R. Pippan. The participants of the meeting in Leoben decided to keep the practice to organize TC2 meetings at least once per year, either during eligible scientific conferences or in a more free way like that in Leoben.
Ad 2) Special issues and other future outputs
At the moment, there are three further special issues that are prepared as output from the ECF17 conference. One of them, under the guest-editorship of J. Pokluda, will again appear in Engng. Fract. Mechanics. This issue will contain selected papers based in particular on contributions presented at the TC2 section of ECF17. It seems to be worthwhile to continue these activities. There is another favorable aspect of such a work: A not negligible amount of money that we were promised to receive from ESIS executive to promote the TC2 activities. We have already received a reasonable support to enable people from developing countries to participate in the TC2 section at ECF17 in Brno.
Another activity should be associated with the application of international projects in the frame of European scientific programs. Many European programs are focused on the support of fracture research in Ukraine and Russia so that the TC2 members should think about that kind of activities for the future.
Ad 3) Next TC2 meetings
The participants agreed that the next meetings of TC2 will be held in Brno, June 2010 and in Dresden, September 2010. The first meeting will be associated with the 6th Int. Conference on Materials Structure and Micromechanics of Fracture (MSMF6). The second meeting will be related to the ECF18 conference. The longer-term plans for the year 2011 will be discussed in Brno next year.
Ad 4) Discussion
Prof. O. Kolednik proposed to work-out a list of TC2 members and other sympathizers. This will be done in collaboration with J. Pokluda. An establishment of the official TC2 ESIS website will also be considered for the future. A proposal of performing Round-Robin tests within the TC2 was raised by Prof. R. Goldstein. Several discussants assumed that this would be rather complicated and not very realistic due to a possible lack of a common motivation and available funds.
TC2 UPDATE 2008
Next TC2 meetings will take place in Brno during the 17th European Conference on Fracture, September 2-5, 2008, and in Leoben, March-April 2009. The deadline for a submission of papers for the meeting in Brno has already passed. However, the call for papers for the Leoben meeting will be announced only in autumn 2008. All potential participants are cordially invited.

4) TC2 meetings in the future.
5) Conclusions.
Ad 1) + 2):
Prof. Pokluda presented some suggestions concerning the future work of TC2. The members should meat at least once in a year at seminars devoted to micromechanisms in Fracture and Fatigue. The meetings should be organized by TC2 members in various European countries. All future ECF conferences are to be considered to be natural venues of TC2 meetings. Special issues of Int. J. Fract., Engng. Fract. Mechanics and Engng. Fail. Analysis could appear as proceedings of individual meetings. The first meeting should be related to the MSMF 5 conference in Brno, June 27.-29, 2007.
Ad 3) + 4):
Ad 5):
(i) The TC2 was successfully re-established (chairman Prof. J. Pokluda).
(ii) The next meetings of TC2 will be held in Brno (June 2007), Leoben (spring 2008) and again in Brno (ECF 17, September 2008). The organizers will attempt to produce special issues of IJF, EFM or EFA devoted to TC2 meetings.
Additional note:
The re-establishment of TC2 was officially confirmed at the ESIS council meeting in Alexandroupolis, July 5, 2006.
